UoG student Radio which is also known as Tone Radio is launching on the internet from tomorrow at ToneRadio.co uk. it is aimed to be Modern, professional, student orientated to the end, it will be unique!

Another strike happens at university this time effecting in an an another way. why all the tuesdays? - why not a thursday ?

Industrial Action

Due to industrial by UNISON members on Tuesday 28th March the FCH Learning Centre will only be open between the hours of 10am - 4pm. The IT suite will be closed.

We apologise for any inconvenience which this may cause.

The Learning Centres at Pittville, Park and Oxstalls will be open during normal hours, but some services may be affected by staff shortages.

University students off to Commonwealth Games

March 2006

Two University of Gloucestershire students left for Melbourne this week in preparation for the Commonwealth Games. Lorraine Shaw and Zoë Derham, both sports students studying at the Oxstalls Campus, will be competing for Team England in the hammer event.

Lorraine, a first year Coaching and Sports Development Foundation degree student is currently the reigning Commonwealth Champion after clinching Gold at the Manchester Games in 2002 with a throw of 66.83metres. For Lorraine, this will be her final games. Zoë, a second year Sports Education degree student and Lorraine's protégé is rapidly stepping into her coach's shoes as England's top athlete in the sport. She qualified for the games with a personal best of 65.48 metres.

Both students are on the University's Open Sports Scholarship programme, which offers them the support they need to mix their sporting and academic commitments. They have benefited from having funding to help with their training and competition expenses as well as being provided with sport science support from academic staff within the faculty. Extra academic support is also offered to assist the athletes with the work that they will miss whilst away.

Lorraine and Zoë are committed to university sport and will both be competing for the University in the BUSA Championships in April. Competition starts for Lorraine and Zoë on the 20th March, so keep an eye out for them on the television.

NEW SABBATICAL TEAM ANNOUNCED

Daisy Noble, Matt Bowman, Anna Dennis & Si Potter all romped to victory in the 2006/2007 Sabbatical Elections. UGSU would like to thank all candidates that took part in the elections and extend congratulations to the new Sabbatical team. 1,059 votes were cast across the two days of voting so a big thank you to all of you that voted - the winner of the i-pod will be announced in SPACE this week.

Talking about Student Radio Coming to UOG

seems interesting Student Radio - i thought however BBC Radio Gloucestershire had been broadcasting from the Pittville Campus for a while maybe they might share or maybe use the BBC Radio Gloucestershire licence. the broadcasts from BBC Radio Gloucestershire went county wide although any student radio station will have to be limited to a smaller area (at the start likely that campus wide but later well approximately 10 miles if based on my campus although 15 miles whould be a sufficent distance to cater all University of Gloucestershire campuses and also if Gloscat wanted to get involved could. Gloscat and University of Gloucestershire (formerly Cheltenham College of HE) have been joined previously in mergers.

Higher Education Staff to strike!

NATFHE & AUT one-day strike on 7 March

2 of the common Higher Education academic unions is to strike - The academic unions NATFHE and AUT have called a one-day strike on all University campuses Nationwide that will bring Universities across the UK to a complete halt on Tuesday 7 March by a day of strike action, with an assessment boycott beginning the following day. The NATFHE Branch at the University of Gloucestershire regrets that students will be affected by this action. Our national negotiators have indicated willingness to continue negotiations with the employers’ organisation UCEA.

This action, which will be followed by action-short-of strike affecting assessment, is as a result of a democratic union decision. The National Union of Students has given support to the campaign. The Bett Report in 1999 indicated the serious problem of academics’ pay, and the situation has declined further in subsequent years.

NATFHE and AUT campaigned with NUS against the introduction of £3000 tuition fees. However when the legislation was being debated in parliament, ministers related that “at least a third of that money will be put back into salaries”. This is the basis of the current pay claim.

University to change passwords early

Passwords for University MLE accounts are normally set to expire every 90 days. Some users have reported the problem of their password expiring during a University vacation period and being unable to obtain help with getting it reset if difficulties arise. To reduce this problem, all student MLE passwords will be forced to expire during the week of December 12th - 15th. This will ensure that the new passwords will not expire during the Christmas vacation.

When your old password expires you will required to choose a new one the next time you log in.

Extended access rooms at FCH and Park campus will be open at the current times apart from the Christmas shutdown (December 24th - Jan 2nd) when it be closed
Books issued that whould have a due in date during the vacation are issued to the week of January 20th - you can still hand books in and take out during the vacation

University Refectory Xmas Theme Week

The week of December w/c 11th the refectory having christmas lunch at lunchtime everyday - normal meals whould still be served. During the vacation University refectorys open differently so ask for details

University Zero torrance of decorations in student residences says no to Xmas

student services department have announced that students can't have decorations in there rooms claimed to health and safety rreasons - wheres there xmas spirit ?

Uni finally gives good news -over 2 months late!

'Following the recent refurbishment at FCH & Park Learning Centres we are pleased to inform you that new extended hours ICT facilities will be available to staff and students from 6.30am on Monday 5th December on both campuses. The new facility at FCH campus is located in room QW003, entrance via the North Porch and the new facility at Park campus is located in room LC040 via the Learning Centre entrance. Opening hours for both facilities are as follows:

Monday - Saturday 06.30am - 2am
Sunday 06.30am - 00.30am

During normal Learning Centre opening times access to these facilities is via the Learning Centre entrance. Access to these facilities for staff and students will be via a card swipe system with a valid ID card. For health, safety and security purposes CCTV and campus security will monitor these rooms on a regular basis.'

Recent - this was due 24th September and been place further and further back. September this was due by University of Gloucestershire never come to me with a multi million proposal - it cost me millions in late fees. Me now hopes the technology thats been going idle in the 4 learning centres for a about a month with self issuing books scanner and card access to rooms now speeds up as anything linked to the universitys big all change idealogy of how the campuses are and whats taught on each campus was due to be complete at the end of summer vacation

Dear All

Thank you for your comment cards.

I can confirm that a 24 hour, or as we like to call it extended opening hours, facility will be available very shortly in LC040, the new service point area. We are awaiting completion on the swipe card access system and as soon as this is ready we will be extending the opening hours in this room. The room will be available from 06.30am - 02.00am on an open access basis.

Notices will be displayed in and around the Learning Centre as well as on our Learning Centre web page as soon as the facility is available.

I am sorry that I can't give you a confirmed date but be assured we are trying to get the facility available as soon as possible.

Unusual Thursday

Today is a thursday and usually thursday's usually mean 2 modules to be done with 4 hrs of lectures and upto 2 hrs more of lab combined but in light of the Graduation Ceromonies Wed- Fri many lectures are canceled on these days. Wednesdays and Fridays are not effected cause there no lectures those days. The campus today been very empty - i bet many students are resting and having some time to there self. well the 1st years deffinately they glad to have lectures off and are in a party spirit. For us in the the other years its a good break when we can concentrate on particular things or relax abit from earlier in the semester and prepare for the rest of the semester and the break for xmas .

Today or Tomorrow a few of my friends that were in Year 3 last year are graduatating and wish them a good time

Open Day Hell

Today, Saturday October 29th is a university open day when potential students come to our university to see if they may want to apply and come here next year. This open day for current students is rather annoying students are unable to use the ICT Suites (i managed to ask 1 lecturer to allow me in that knew me).in favor of the potential students current students could suffer and also the libuary is closed - so for those who want to get out books for there courses can't either. to top this off the SU is closed to 8pm tonight - during the day for the open day. for the students in halls of residence they get disturbed with people walking around and not always quietly. some people might think thats a good idea but have already heard a few people comment that it been rather noisey outside.At least the Refectory and Laudrette is still open to current students .

Uni Upgrades Email and Network Storage

Over this weekend my uni is going to be upgrading our network storage and email server (if you know my student email i advise you don't email it to Monday) when supposely it be complete.

Currently university gives every student a piteful 20mb of space Network storage and this is the first upgrade for serveral years - i can fill that up with no trouble but from Monday this is increasing to a more respectiveful 100mb with another 50mb coming in November . can there be a 50mb bonus each month - well i can dream. Since Hotmail upgraded to 250mb (early 2005) for email io been emailing my uni work to my hotmail account but will now not have to do it as much (well 5 times less ).

I still not mentioned the increase in maiil account space this is also 20mb and using Microsoft Outlook Exchange Server 2000 but on Monday we have 200mb for email how many now

Student News: Earthquake fundraising

I do not always read my student emails but after fastreading this email i thought i put it on my space and alsotry and do something.

Following the recent earthquake in Pakistan & Kashmir, we will be raising funds in order to support the school and the community of the Rawalakot district which has been devastated by the disaster. More than 90% of the houses have been destroyed or rendered unsafe, therefore the Pearl Valley school building is being utilised as a relief camp for those who have survived. The University of Gloucestershire has been associated with the KEF project for a number of years. KEF chairman, Gen Rahim Khan has previously visited the University to meet and discuss developments.

The immediate need is for funds for short-term shelter, food, clothing and medical supplies for the community. The KEF team have also set up relief camps in Bagh and Muzafarabad which have also been hit by the earthquake. Akram Khan-Cheema OBE, fellow of University of Gloucestershire, has also raised and sent more than twenty thousand pounds. He is secretary of the Kashmir Education Foundation, a UK Charity, which supports the school and other projects in rural Kashmir and Pakistan. He is planning to go within the next two weeks to discuss the best way in helping to rebuild the lives and homes in the long term. We therefore have a direct financial link to the leadership of the school and will ensure that funds are directed quickly to those in most need.

So at Pearl Valley School, there is sadness at the loss of their school hall, but on a much deeper level also for children who may well have lost parents in the earthquake. No children were hurt when the hall collapsed, but everyone is aware that this is a project that will need our ongoing support as they try to rebuild their lives. The Pearl Valley school is in a rural part of Kashmir which is very difficult to get to so it is fortunate that we can send help by giving aid directly and promptly through the KEF infrastructure which is reliable, and has a very transparent structure to ensure accountability.

Moving In after uni mess up

I have just moved in to my halls - after all the accomodation and academic hassle they been giving me the last 4 weeks.2 days before freshers week (4 weeks ago) i got told i was automatically withdrawn from my uni. i queried and now my Field Chair and the Assistant Head of UMS Modular Scheme says an 'adminstrative error' happened cause my Field Chair was going to allow a extention to a module that was due Mid September to November and change my degree from computing defined route (COSMjr) to Computing with ECommerce (CO[Mjr]WEC[Mnr]). Instead the UMS Student Records Team at my uni withdrawn me completely -canceling my student support (loan and tution fees), accomodation and module choices for what whould been Yr 3. I doing Yr 2 again with what has been called 'Mitagating Circumstances' i moved into accomodation today *celebrates*. My Student loan and tution fee support been reinstated after a long dialogue with my LEA and uni chatting. They hope i can do year 3 modules after xmas with any failed modules at Level 2 if any should arrise (I not failed any let ).

As this week is week 3 of the UMS scheme at my uni - i have not upto now been sure what modules i be doing year 3 or year 2 but the last 3 weeks i been timetabled for both - year 3 will now be removed however and my expected graduation been placed back by 1 semester to Feb 2007. therefore i get 15 weeks (1 semester) more student life .

UGSU Sabbatical Officers - Steph

With today friday the last day of the sabbatical officer year for 2004/5. the farce of the 2005/6 officers continue

this time its Sports Officer

Sabbatical Elections: Sports Officer Information

As you may have heard and has been posted on the forums, Jamie Sampson has removed himself from the Election and thus, the role of Sports Officer.

It was deemed that Jamie did not resign from the role of Sports Officer but instead removed himself from the election process. The reason for this is simply that he could not resign from a post which he had not yet taken up (The new Sabbs officially start on the 27th June).

As a result it meant that we have been able to offer the post to the candidate who came second in the elections, Steph Carlyon. We have been able to do this without the need for a new election or the need for an EGM as a result of the reasons pointed out above. It is worth pointing out that this decision was unanimously agreed by the current and next year's Executive Committee at a meeting held on the 16th June.

Summer Ball Snopsis

I had a good time it was lots of fun as its 3:40 ish am i not write much i rather quiet. i think people want a wake for those leaving later as typically happens quite a few students leave to go home stright after the ball.

Estelle, 8:30-9:10pm she sang some songs. it was followed after a little interlude for drinks and 'other' breaks by Kosheen. some agrogont anti southwesterners slightly spoilered it alittle with some deliberate booing - they were removed by Event Security. Kosheen in my opiniion and other friends was enjoyed the most and the whole audence was into it. it did start with about 1/2 a room but rapidly filled up after a few songs. We got to hear Kosheens hits and songs from there album. also we were treated to a few songs from there forecoming album due in the late autumn and they done a poll did you like the song or not. (if large majority approved it get added to the Album).. it was followed by Good Looking Chain - this drove quite a few away (they take part in T4 Pop Beach 2005 Sunday afternoon on Weston Super Mere Beach 'just down the road'. but when Scott Mills from BBC Radio 1 was at the summer ball from 11pm-1:15am later during his segment aparently whould plug the SU Ball on his Monday show . numbers listening rocketed again. from 1:15am the both stages were broadcasting both 1 with a screen with music from the 80's 90's and modern day and student classics

University of Gloucestershire might be a small uni with a small SU and really nre. the university has 12,000 FT students - students of which 10.600 students got tickets. 10,600+ tickets sold for a summer ball rivals the large university's like Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford in amount sold and percentage of students bothering to take part. UGSU broke the record again from Uni of Cambridge tonight .

University of Glkoucestershire shoudl be proud that Scott Mills came and may plug the SU and Uni generally and the Kosheen Exclusives there were the mention of do not record etc etc when

I did not see Sophie and Anneka Awwww. Hope they had a good time - did not get to say goodbye for the summer. and with sophie another academic year i not met her in person but chatted to her all the time - she from my uni and she has sent me prove she exists!. but however made friends with a girl called Hayley and her mates. I know Marco Marco knows Russell. Russell (btw he is 25) has a sister who is 18 and that is Hayley and ending her 1st year and based on the FCH (Central Town) Campus. I hang around Marco and some of his Mates - Russell had his girlfriend up so was hardly around though and talked to Hayley now and again. She said i think i seen you before i was and said it was xmas and freshers week. if it was freshers week you might seen me around Park, Oxstalls, FCH and Hardwick. out of the year 1 reminstances that could happen i bumped into just Emma Grove (last year floormate) and her boyfriend both know me quite well. no idea on the other non US floormates though!

A person who i did not know the name of last year who i chatted to when i got lost and seperated from my mates and for a time she did. i bumped into her again but let again did not get her name. Apart from she is a 3rd year student studies Environment and Leisure. an got her student number at least if i do 7digit studentNumber@glos.ac.uk i get through to her i do it tomorrow - better still after this. its not declare of love just to see who they are. put a name to a face. etc etc

Breaking News: Exams

It just been announced by my field chair that the exam retake (on thursday) i was placed down due to a adminstrative error with only being told on Monday i been placed in it instead of having august orginally. The retake now been scheduled for august and I has been excluded from that exam with an high priority memo to Corperate Services that my Student Records would be updated asap. and i have to sign something to say i happy. I got to sign that before 6pm

First Exam today it was 2 sections. Section A i liked Section B did not like.

Anyhow another exam tomorrow - maybe even 1 even later in the week due to a adminstive error i been placed with a extra exam that i not studied . not done any coursework and the exam going to be on what? Fail 0 or Qualified Fail 0-20 . if i could get 21% i can reassess it

Confirmed my order at the Offical Summer Ball clothing organisers of the University of Gloucestershire Summer Ball 2005. for mens formal wear this was Debenhams Men Formal Hire

they took measurements of me (well Kirsty did she works in Debenhams was meant to be 15 mins it went on twice or even 3 times as much) not giving the sizes on here but whould say what i brought/ hiring.

Suit, Trousers, Shirt, Bow Tie Cummerbund, Cufflinks all for £37 usually nearly £60 though.

Summer Ball is a week on saturday

its been 5 days since the results publish and Examination results have been finalised - no more rerun or elections till next academic anyway *sighs* yey after this academic year of student elections and rerun disaster i glad its over.

XX250 - Final week of Module

Today was the final XX250 module lecture *sobs* not . We done a practice test (correction: more we went through it as a class). i got 45% of them right *cheers* would not know about the real test there were 3 questions that were abit dodgy although i think i got about about 50% if not more right . i been commenting in previous weeks of the attendance falling this week we had to many for the room at at least 204 in a 200 person room. no idea where the extra 170 people came from . about 30 are students that come to every lecture.

As there was no notes today there is no link but there is a resit for the module in August if students need to do the exam/test or submit coursework that is.

This week is week 13 and this week as Monday were bank holiday. the whole week is liable to disruption.

Monday lectures are running mainly on Tuesday and Wednesday if decided to run. when time is available

Tuesday Lectures are running Tuesday, Wednesday if decided to run when time is available

Wednesdays to run on Wednesday afternoon when University sport tends to take place

Thursday and Friday expected to be normal

Reading the indepth timetable and room alocation list my Monday Lecture not been relocated and Tuesday's is not running - i have checked a few times. This leaves Thursday and Friday only which be prominantly revision lectures.

University Lectures XX250 (EC) and Software Development

Software Development (CO226)

This afternoon we had our Software development and today we done something creative for the first 20 mins we were give a unseen Case study and then done software delopment tasks on it creating certain diagrams then done some practical. this week must of been one of the better weeks as this lecture has been lacking creativity for a few weeks and been rather dull but today was a contrast to this

XX/EC 250/1

Update on EC250 from Thursday afternoon (i do not have lectures on Wednesday ) i forgot to write a report (i had other things on my mind ) on the university lecture but it was basically a extention to week 11 lecture done more methods of research, there presentation. They went through a practice multiple choice/ write briefly about x thing tests there is 2 of these 1 on statistics and another on preforming research. this Test for is next Thursday but it not under normal examination conditions *sighs of relieve* the amount of attendence this week was rather poor but at the start of the lecture was abit up on other weeks although as typical they did not stay long.

How likely is the 20 min test is going to be taken by more then the commited 30 out of 150 students that turns up. *suggests the non attenders read the notes *. i need to check i have all my notes

University Lecture - Collections (Data Structures Computing)

This evening we done Collections and the lecturer said it would not be in the exam . To be honest whats the point in teaching it then we could of had some revision although he said it might be useful to learn it or familise it for the future. He later went on to talk about the exam and that next week is affected because the bank holiday with Mon- Wednesday lectures being filled into Tues and Wednesday if possible if lectures going ahead to check the Intranet available at University. Does that mean Midnight finishes as currently the uni is really lacking lecture room space with the uni day of 8:15am to 10:15pm .

University Lecture - Thursday XX250/1

Thursday early evening we done had our compulsory research methods XX250/1 module and i made observations that no bet the lecture Kevin would have noticed each week the lecture time gets less and less, the amount that a group of 10-14 students that so far have turned up most weeks attending a 2 hr timetabled lecture they leaving as early as 20 mins the first week it was just over a hour. The lectures were about 1hr 20 mins but now as short as 45 mins some week with the lecture giving the impression why am i here? the amount of students also fall attending from a packed lecture hall of about 150 to no more then 60 and thats being obtimistic. if depressing enough the XX251 part of the XX250 module is linked to next year dissertation although the XX250 and XX251 weekly schuedule can go in the bin since week 5 back at week before easter was the last lecture to run to it and as since lectures have been scheduled and rescheduled again. the 5 weeks of the semester ( 3 remain before exams) we have been assigned PY250 module as its Physcology related although at the end of the semester i would not have XX250 nor XX251 or Py250 etc but the school of Computing in the Business School standard EC250 - the school i majoring in. For American Studies (25% of degree) it is apart of the School of Humanities and English i not allowed to do a dissertation in

- should not have single gender events as almost all my friends are the oposite gender

This evening we done Hashing although when looking at it it makes a person like most of the module and very differcult but it not all that bad its something i understand from the Data Structures module on the first attempt and it was rather interesting although aome other lectures on previous weeks people wanted to leave as they were so bored.
